Abstract
Consciousness is commonly treated either as an internal product of neural computation or as a more fundamental field to which biological systems somehow gain access. The Swygert Theory Of Everything AO (TSTOEAO) offers a third possibility. This paper proposes that consciousness is an ever-evolving, receiver-centered but relationally distributed field of gradients, histories, constraints, information, values, costs, and possibilities. The Field of Consciousness is neither wholly contained within an individual nor wholly external to the individual. It consists of three interacting domains: an Intrinsic Field carried by the receiver, an Extrinsic Field presented by the world beyond the receiver, and a Relational Field generated through the active relationships connecting receiver and environment. Conscious experience is the realized expression produced when a particular receiver encounters and interprets this field through its own Encoded Equilibrium.
The framework explicitly rejects the identification of consciousness with sensory input. Sensory pathways contribute to conscious expression, but consciousness also incorporates memory, internally generated imagery, anticipation, interoception, emotion, reasoning, imagination, values, unresolved history, and possible future routes. At any moment, portions of reality are already committed by previous outcomes and existing boundaries, while other aspects remain possible rather than predetermined.
A central addition developed here is the Cost-of-Correction Principle. Conscious systems do not merely encounter and reduce gradients. Every gradient flattened, preserved, redirected, or exchanged carries a price. That price may be physical, cognitive, temporal, emotional, relational, informational, opportunity-based, moral, or principled. Values, morals, and principles therefore become part of the architecture by which conscious receivers determine not merely which gradient can be flattened, but which correction pathways are acceptable and where the cost of correction may be paid.
The resulting model places consciousness within the existing TSTOEAO grammar of gradient, boundary, pathway, receiver, correction, cost-location, equilibrium, and recursion while preserving uncertainty concerning any deeper nonlocal or substrate-level mechanism. The framework produces a testable program for distinguishing ordinary sensory and neural pathways from any presently unregistered routes and for studying consciousness as a dynamic architecture of structured possibility rather than a predetermined state.

1. Introduction
The scientific study of consciousness has produced sophisticated theories without producing a generally accepted answer to the fundamental question of what consciousness is. Competing frameworks emphasize global broadcasting, information integration, recurrent processing, predictive inference, self-modeling, embodiment, or combinations of these mechanisms. A major preregistered adversarial study published in 2025 directly compared predictions of Global Neuronal Workspace Theory and Integrated Information Theory and found a complex pattern rather than a simple victory for either framework, illustrating that the physical architecture of consciousness remains actively contested.
TSTOEAO approaches the problem differently.
Instead of first asking where consciousness is located anatomically, it asks a more general question:
What must be true of a system for one conscious expression to become realized rather than another?
The foundational TSTOEAO relation is:
V = E × Y
where V represents realized expression, E represents available energy, opportunity, information, or capacity appropriate to the domain, and Y represents Encoded Equilibrium: the relational architecture governing how that availability may become expressed.
Applied to consciousness, the proposition becomes straightforward.
Available information alone does not determine conscious experience.
The physical environment alone does not determine conscious experience.
The brain alone, considered without history, embodiment, relationship, and present state, does not fully specify the conscious content realized at a particular moment.
The realized conscious state is conditioned by the architecture through which possibility becomes expression.
This paper therefore develops the Field of Consciousness as a TSTOEAO object.
The central proposition is:
Consciousness is an ever-evolving relational expression arising through a receiver embedded within a field of intrinsic, extrinsic, and relational gradients whose available pathways, histories, costs, constraints, and possibilities are continually reconstructed by previous expression.
This proposal does not require that consciousness be a new electromagnetic-like physical field. The term field is initially used operationally: a structured domain of gradients and relationships capable of influencing conscious expression. A stronger claim that the Field of Consciousness possesses an independent physical carrier, measurable field amplitude, or nonlocal coupling mechanism would require separate evidence.
The distinction is deliberate.
TSTOEAO should first specify the architecture that can be tested before declaring the ultimate ontology responsible for it.
2. Consciousness Is Ever-Evolving
A finished consciousness would be a contradiction within the present framework.
Every experience changes what subsequent experience encounters.
Learning changes expectations.
Loss changes valuation.
Injury changes accessible pathways.
Trust changes interpersonal interpretation.
Memory changes the meaning of future signals.
A decision closes some possibilities while opening others.
A new relationship creates gradients and pathways that did not previously exist.
The receiver at time t + 1 is therefore not perfectly identical to the receiver at time t.
This gives consciousness a recursive architecture:
Conscious expression at state n → altered receiver and field at state n + 1.
The implication is significant.
Consciousness is not simply a succession of independent snapshots.
It is recursive becoming.
What becomes consciously expressed now is incorporated into the architecture governing what can become consciously expressed next.
This relation directly mirrors Recursive Boundary Construction in TSTOEAO:
Vₙ → Yₙ₊₁.
For consciousness, however, the recursion acts upon both the receiver and the relational field.
A conversation alters both participants.
A memory alters the interpretation of a place.
A frightening experience changes the future meaning of a sound.
A moral decision can strengthen a principle that influences subsequent choices.
The consequence is that consciousness possesses history in a stronger sense than data storage.
History is not merely retained.
History modifies admissibility.
3. Where Does the Field of Consciousness Exist?
The Field of Consciousness should not be defined as existing exclusively inside the individual.
Neither should it be defined as one universal external reservoir that is simply received by every conscious being.
The first model cannot adequately describe the dependence of consciousness upon relational and environmental conditions.
The second creates an equally serious problem: if a single external field simply dictated experience, why would different conscious receivers experience the same environment so differently?
The TSTOEAO resolution is:
The Field of Consciousness is receiver-centered but relationally distributed.
It exists through the receiver’s relationship with both its internal state and the world beyond it.
A useful first representation is:
F_C^R(t) = {F_I, F_E, F_R}
where F_C^R is the consciousness field relevant to receiver R at time t, F_I is the Intrinsic Field, F_E is the Extrinsic Field, and F_R is the Relational Field.
These are distinguishable but inseparable components of conscious expression.
4. The Intrinsic Field
The Intrinsic Field consists of gradients and conditions carried by the receiver.
For a human receiver these include biological state, neural organization, memories, learned associations, internal models, bodily regulation, emotion, imagination, attention, expectation, unresolved conflict, anticipated outcomes, desires, fears, beliefs, values, principles, and the historical consequences of previous experience.
The Intrinsic Field is therefore much larger than immediately active thought.
A person may carry a memory without presently recalling it.
A principle may alter a decision without appearing as an explicit verbal statement.
A physiological disturbance may alter mood before the receiver knows that something physical has changed.
An expectation may alter perception before conscious reasoning occurs.
Modern neuroscience already provides strong reasons to reject a strictly feed-forward picture in which sensory information simply arrives and becomes perception. Hierarchical and predictive models instead describe reciprocal interaction between incoming information, internal state, learned expectation, and inference.
TSTOEAO generalizes this idea.
The receiver does not simply receive the world.
The receiver encounters the world through what it has already become.
5. The Extrinsic Field
The Extrinsic Field consists of conditions beyond the receiver that may participate in its conscious possibility architecture.
This includes obvious physical sources such as light, sound, temperature, objects, geography, organisms, technologies, and environmental events.
It also includes language, institutions, culture, stored information, social structures, communications, tools, and the actions of other receivers.
Importantly, the Extrinsic Field is not limited to conscious actors.
A mountain can create a gradient.
A storm can create a gradient.
A locked door can create a gradient.
A disease can create a gradient.
A computer can create a gradient.
An unfamiliar sound can create a gradient.
None of these needs consciousness in order to alter the conscious receiver.
Therefore:
The Field of Consciousness is not a field composed only of consciousness. It is the field of conditions relevant to conscious expression.
This prevents an unnecessary metaphysical leap.
Consciousness can be relationally distributed without requiring every contributor to the field to itself be conscious.
6. The Relational Field
The Relational Field is the most distinctive component.
It exists neither wholly inside the receiver nor wholly outside it.
It exists in the relationship.
A photograph and a person provide a simple example.
The photograph possesses physical properties independent of the viewer.
The viewer possesses memories and history independent of the photograph.
Yet the conscious expression created when a particular person views that particular photograph may be impossible to explain from either side alone.
The relation produces the gradient.
This applies much more broadly:
person ↔ partner
child ↔ parent
student ↔ teacher
person ↔ home
person ↔ music
person ↔ landscape
person ↔ threat
person ↔ community
receiver ↔ technology
receiver ↔ another conscious receiver.
The Relational Field contains histories that emerge only through interaction.
Two strangers do not possess the same relational field as two people who have lived together for thirty years even if they occupy the same physical room.
A mother and adult child possess a history of biological development, attachment, communication, shared experience, and reciprocal prediction that does not exist between strangers.
This does not establish telepathy or any other anomalous transfer mechanism.
It establishes something more basic and already observable:
relational coupling is a genuine variable.
TSTOEAO therefore treats relationship itself as physical and informational architecture rather than background narrative.
7. Individual Fields Are Distinct but Overlapping
If consciousness were one uniformly shared field, individuality would become difficult to explain.
If consciousness were completely isolated inside each individual, shared meaning and relational co-development would become equally difficult to explain.
The model proposed here allows both individuality and overlap.
Individual Fields of Consciousness are:
distinct, partially permeable, relationally coupled domains.
Two receivers can share parts of the Extrinsic Field while maintaining different Intrinsic Fields.
They can also create a Relational Field that exists specifically between them.
Thus two people can watch the same sunset while experiencing substantially different conscious states.
The external scene may be nearly identical.
But one person associates that place with a marriage.
Another associates it with a death.
A meteorologist sees atmospheric structure.
A painter notices color.
A distracted driver barely registers it.
Same broad external opportunity.
Different receiver.
Different weighting.
Different expression.
The TSTOEAO statement is therefore:
Comparable external input + different receiver architecture → different conscious expression.
This is an application of Conditioned Expression.
8. Consciousness Is More Than Sensory Input
This distinction should be stated without ambiguity:
Sensory pathways inform the Field of Consciousness; they do not constitute the Field of Consciousness.
A person can close their eyes in a silent room and continue to experience memory, imagery, emotion, reasoning, anticipation, bodily sensation, imagination, internal language, dreams, and decision.
A conscious state can therefore contain information that is not presently arriving through the conventional external senses.
The relevant pathways include exteroception, interoception, memory retrieval, internal imagery, prediction, associative processing, emotion, imagination, reasoning, and endogenous neural dynamics.
This does not mean that every internally generated conscious state represents information originating outside the brain.
It means simply that contemporary sensory input is not a sufficient definition of consciousness.
This distinction becomes especially important for dreams.
During dreaming, ordinary external sensory access is substantially altered while a richly structured conscious world may still be generated.
The receiver continues operating, but the relative weighting of pathways changes.
In TSTOEAO language, the admissible route architecture has changed.
The field has not disappeared.
Its active composition has shifted.
9. The Field Is a Field of Gradients
TSTOEAO begins with difference.
Without difference there is no gradient.
Without a gradient there is no correction to perform, route to evaluate, or cost to locate.
Consciousness continuously encounters differences of many kinds:
known and unknown;
expected and observed;
desired and undesired;
safe and dangerous;
remembered and forgotten;
self and other;
present and anticipated;
certainty and uncertainty;
attachment and separation;
need and availability;
action and consequence.
These gradients need not share one physical unit.
They are typed gradients.
A temperature gradient is not interchangeable with a moral conflict.
A hunger signal is not interchangeable with uncertainty about a mathematical proposition.
A disagreement between two people is not physically identical to a pressure differential.
The TSTOEAO Relational Ledger therefore becomes essential.
Each gradient must retain its domain and type.
The theory does not claim that all gradients are numerically identical.
It claims that systems repeatedly confront the architecture:
gradient → boundary → admissible pathway → correction → cost-location → equilibrium.
Consciousness is proposed as one domain in which this grammar becomes particularly rich because multiple gradient types may compete simultaneously.
10. Committed Structure and Structured Possibility
Before an outcome occurs, reality is neither completely unconstrained nor necessarily completely predetermined.
Some aspects are already committed.
The receiver exists.
Its biological history exists.
Its memories exist.
The room exists.
Previous choices have occurred.
Physical constraints already eliminate enormous numbers of impossible outcomes.
Other people may already have acted.
These conditions create the committed structure of the present.
But committed structure does not require one completed future.
Where multiple admissible routes remain, possibility remains.
Thus:
Before an outcome, some aspects of the field are already determined by committed history and existing boundaries, while the unresolved remainder exists as structured possibility.
Possibility is not equivalent to randomness.
The routes need not possess equal probability.
Some may be strongly favored.
Some may be nearly inaccessible.
Some may require large cost.
Some may be blocked by physical boundaries.
Some may be rejected because of principle.
The field therefore contains weighted possibility.
The realized conscious outcome commits one history from a structured route space and thereby changes the route space that follows.
11. The Cost-of-Correction Principle
A consciousness model based upon gradients is incomplete unless it includes the price paid when gradients are flattened.
This is fundamental.
Every realized correction has a cost-location.
Flattening one gradient may create another.
Resolving uncertainty consumes attention.
Learning consumes time.
Acting consumes energy.
Telling the truth may produce social loss.
Avoiding pain may require surrendering opportunity.
Protecting another person may increase danger to oneself.
Maintaining loyalty may preserve an unwanted gradient rather than flatten it.
Forgiveness may reduce one emotional gradient while demanding the cost of relinquishing retaliation.
A moral principle may prevent the easiest available correction.
Consequently, conscious systems cannot be described simply as gradient-minimizing machines.
They are better described as systems that allocate correction across competing gradients while paying, relocating, refusing, or accepting the resulting costs.
A useful generalized route cost is:
C_eff(r) = C_phys + C_cog + C_time + C_emotion + C_rel + C_opp + C_norm
where the terms represent physical, cognitive, temporal, emotional, relational, opportunity, and normative cost associated with route r.
No claim is made that these quantities can simply be summed in identical physical units without a domain-specific transformation.
The expression represents a ledger architecture.
It says that the receiver may treat several classes of cost as consequential when determining which route remains acceptable.
This is where values, morals, and principles acquire a precise role.
12. Values, Morals, and Principles as Cost Architecture
Morality does not need to be inserted into consciousness as something supernatural.
Within the present model, values and principles can become persistent features of the Intrinsic Field.
They influence route weighting.
Suppose two routes flatten the same immediate gradient.
Route A is faster and physically cheaper but violates a deeply held principle.
Route B requires more effort and preserves the principle.
A purely mechanical cost model based only upon energy or time predicts Route A.
A receiver with a strong normative architecture may choose Route B.
The reason is not that the physical cost disappeared.
The effective cost landscape changed.
For that receiver:
moral cost can exceed physical cost.
This has major implications for the theory of agency.
A person’s values can preserve gradients deliberately.
A parent may endure fear to protect a child.
A scientist may tolerate uncertainty rather than falsify data.
A person may refuse revenge despite an unresolved emotional gradient.
A soldier may accept personal danger because duty is valued more highly than immediate safety.
The chosen path therefore cannot always be inferred from the smallest instantaneous gradient.
It must be inferred from the full cost ledger.
This produces a stronger statement:
Conscious agency consists partly in deciding which gradients may be flattened, which must be preserved, which costs may be paid, and where the price of correction is permitted to reside.
That may ultimately prove more useful than defining free will as absence of causation.
13. Free Will as Bounded Route Participation
The traditional debate often treats free will as binary.
Either the receiver is entirely free from physical causation or no meaningful freedom exists.
TSTOEAO suggests a different interpretation.
Freedom can be bounded.
The receiver does not create every imaginable route.
Physical law, previous history, biological limitations, other agents, and existing boundaries constrain possibility.
Yet within that constrained route space a conscious receiver may participate in:
recognizing alternatives;
changing their weights;
refusing an available route;
delaying correction;
accepting one cost to avoid another;
creating a new pathway through learning or invention;
and selecting among routes that remain physically admissible.
Free will therefore becomes:
bounded participation in the weighting, selection, creation, rejection, and commitment of future routes within structured possibility.
This formulation avoids the requirement that consciousness stand outside nature.
Agency becomes part of nature’s relational architecture.
14. Receiver-Conditioned Expression
The Field of Consciousness is not itself the conscious experience.
This distinction must remain explicit.
The field contains relevant gradients, conditions, pathways, history, and possibility.
The receiver supplies boundary and interpretive architecture.
The conscious state is the realized expression.
Thus:
Field ≠ Receiver ≠ Conscious Experience.
A useful TSTOEAO expression is:
V_C(t) = E_C(t) × Y_C(t | F_C^R)
where V_C is the realized conscious expression, E_C is the available conscious opportunity, Y_C is the receiver’s Encoded Equilibrium, and F_C^R is the relevant consciousness field.
The multiplication sign retains the general TSTOEAO meaning: realization depends jointly upon availability and relational conditioning; it need not represent ordinary scalar multiplication.
A more complete route formulation would include admissible pathways, transformations, weights, timing, receivers, and costs.
The essential principle remains:
availability does not equal expression.
15. Coupled Conscious Fields
When conscious receivers interact repeatedly, their fields may become coupled.
Receiver A alters Receiver B’s field.
B responds.
That response alters A’s field.
The next interaction therefore begins from a state created partly by the previous one.
A conversation provides the simplest demonstration.
A speaks.
B interprets.
B answers.
A now possesses information and relational history that did not exist before B answered.
Each expression becomes part of the next boundary condition.
The resulting architecture is:
Aₙ → Bₙ₊₁ → Aₙ₊₂ → …
This is not merely information exchange.
It is co-evolution.
Trust can accumulate.
Distrust can accumulate.
Language becomes specialized.
Private meanings form.
Expectations change.
Entire relationships acquire their own history.
The Relational Field becomes increasingly structured.
Thus:
Conscious fields can co-evolve without becoming identical.
That distinction preserves individuality while explaining profound relational coupling.
16. Relation to Existing Consciousness Frameworks
Existing theories already capture important components of this architecture.
Global-workspace approaches emphasize selective access and broader availability of information. Dehaene, Lau, and Kouider explicitly distinguish unconscious processing from information made globally available and from self-monitoring of that processing.
Integrated-information approaches emphasize intrinsic causal organization within a system, while predictive and active-inference approaches emphasize relationships between internal models, sensory evidence, action, expectation, and state regulation.
TSTOEAO does not need to reject these mechanisms.
Instead it places them within a larger relational grammar.
Global access may describe one routing architecture.
Integration may describe one receiver property.
Prediction error may instantiate one gradient.
Action may flatten or relocate one gradient.
Interoceptive regulation may represent one intrinsic route family.
None alone has to equal consciousness in its entirety.
The Field of Consciousness asks how these mechanisms participate together in determining why this receiver, from this history, under these boundaries, at this moment, realizes this conscious expression rather than another.
17. Nonlocality and Unregistered Pathways
The present framework does not require telepathy, precognition, nonlocal consciousness, or any unidentified field interaction.
Nor does it prohibit their investigation.
This is an important methodological advantage.
If a claimed anomalous information route exists, it should be treated like any other proposed route.
Known pathways must first be closed.
Visual leakage must be excluded.
Auditory and subvocal cues must be excluded.
Facilitator influence must be excluded.
Stored information must be excluded.
Probability and selection effects must be controlled.
Targets should be generated after separation where appropriate.
Predictions should be preregistered.
Only then should an unregistered route be inferred.
The governing rule is:
Before declaring a new pathway, close every known pathway.
If an unknown route survives that process, the Relational Ledger expands.
The underlying TSTOEAO grammar does not need to be rewritten.
A new pathway is registered.
This is scientifically preferable to assuming either that anomalous access must exist or that it cannot exist.
18. Empirical Predictions
The Field of Consciousness becomes scientifically useful only where it generates discriminating observations.
One prediction is that comparable external input should produce systematically different conscious expression when declared receiver-state variables differ.
A second is that prior relational history should alter interpretation even where immediate sensory information is controlled.
A third is that value and principle should predict route selection in cases where the physically cheapest correction conflicts with a stable normative cost.
A fourth is recursive: a realized decision should measurably alter subsequent weighting of otherwise comparable possibilities.
A fifth concerns coupling. Relational variables such as familiarity, trust, attachment, shared history, and expectation should produce measurable differences beyond simple physical proximity when experimental design holds immediate sensory input constant.
A sixth concerns anomalous information access. If such access exists, performance should remain above chance after every registered ordinary route is blocked and should vary systematically with prospectively specified relational conditions.
Failure of these predictions would require modification or rejection of the corresponding TSTOEAO consciousness claims.
19. Scientific Boundary of the Present Claim
The strongest defensible claim of this paper is not that a new physical consciousness field has been demonstrated.
It is narrower:
Conscious expression can be coherently modeled as the realized state of a receiver interacting with an evolving, relationally distributed domain of intrinsic, extrinsic, and relational gradients whose pathways, histories, costs, and constraints condition what becomes consciously expressed.
The term field becomes a stronger physical claim only when a measurable coupling variable, propagation rule, field quantity, or distinct prediction is established.
Until then, the Field of Consciousness is a formal relational architecture.
This distinction protects the theory.
A powerful grammar should not be weakened by claiming more than the evidence permits.
20. Conclusion
TSTOEAO offers a conception of consciousness that is neither confined to the skull nor dissolved into a homogeneous universal mind.
The Field of Consciousness is receiver-centered but relationally distributed.
It contains three interacting domains: the Intrinsic Field, the Extrinsic Field, and the Relational Field.
Sensory pathways contribute to this field but do not define it.
Memory, imagination, bodily state, emotion, values, expectation, internally generated activity, history, and structured possibility also participate.
The conscious receiver does not merely flatten gradients.
It confronts competing gradients and must determine which may be corrected, which must remain, which pathways are admissible, and where the cost of correction will be paid.
That cost may be physical or informational.
It may be time.
It may be opportunity.
It may be emotional.
It may be relational.
It may be moral.
It may simply be the price required to remain faithful to a principle.
This yields a more complete TSTOEAO sequence:
gradient → boundary → admissible pathway → valuation → correction → cost-location → realized expression → reconstructed field.
Consciousness therefore becomes an ever-evolving process of bounded expression within structured possibility.
The future is neither empty nor fully written.
Committed history supplies structure.
Gradients supply difference.
Boundaries constrain routes.
Values alter cost.
Conscious receivers participate in selection.
Realized outcomes reconstruct what becomes possible next.
Consciousness, in this formulation, is not merely something a system has.
It is something a relational system continually becomes.
